When calculating an employees total hours for one day, do you calculate this based on the calendar day or the day the shift started?
Calendar Day
If the account is set up to use the “Calendar Day”… Any hours that falls on a specific day gets the rates for that day.
A sample scenario would be is if the emplyoee works on the evening shift.
Let’s say 09:00 PM – 06:00 AM with 1hr unpaid break. If…
DAY 1 is a Regular Day
DAY 2 is a Holiday.
If the employee started working from 09:00 PM, the employee will get Night Differential from 10PM-12 midnight (2hrs).
From 12 midnight til 6AM, the employee will then get the Holiday ND rate since Day 2 is a Holiday.
If the employee takes overtime on a holiday, then he’ll get Holiday OT.
Shift Start
If the account is set up to use “Shift Started” this means that the system will use the day when the shift started.
A sample scenario would be is if the emplyoee works on the evening shift.
Let’s say 09:00 PM – 06:00 AM with 1hr unpaid break. If…
DAY 1 is a Regular Day
DAY 2 is a Holiday.
If the employee started working from 09:00 PM, the employee will get regular Night Differential (ND) rate from 10PM-12 midnight (2hrs). From 12 midnight til 6AM, even though that this is a holiday, the system will use the Regular ND rate because of the “shift start” option.
If the employee takes overtime on a holiday, then he’ll also get the Regular OT. Unless his shift starts on a holiday.

Another Sample Scenario:
If an employee works on the graveyard shift on a Friday, that overlaps on a Saturday (Rest day):
a. Employees gets paid the regular rates that starts on a Friday (Shift Started)
This means they get Regular ND and Regular OT even if their shift overlaps on a Saturday (Rest day)
b. Or employees gets paid based on the day they worked. (Calendar Day)
This means that once their shift overlaps to the Saturday (Rest day), they get paid Rest day rate from 12midnight, and Rest day ND and Rest day OT.
