How the old absence notification system work is it mainly add a reminder to send the notification a day earlier. Once the time elapses for the reminder it is executed. The issue was the execution is not validated in anyway. If it the reminder exists the absence email will be sent. The event that removes the reminder is the clock in. If that event fails to remove the reminder the reminder will just execute without checking the current status.
Aside from the obvious fix which is to check for the current state a few other optimizations has been added. For one the load on the system for processing schedules and setting up the notification has been spread out throughout the day. This reduces the chance of this process slowing the system down and causing delays.
